Look at this, pointed to by Nicholas Gruen, who says quite reasonably that he is prepared to believe that McCain is genuine. So am I, thank God.

It's admirable that John McCain said those things. However, his campaign has been trying to be as disrespectful as possible to Obama and assassinate his character. McCain's comments in that video contradict many things that his campaign have been saying about Obama. I hope that this represents a U turn by the McCain campaign on this matter.
If McCain is truly genuine, he'll pull the rest of his campaign into line and they'll all stop the slanderous attacks on Obama.

True. That's the real test.
And I have absolutely no doubt he will fail it. His entire campaign so far is a series of instances of lowering the bar if he thinks it'll help him win. He'll only abandon the slanderous attacks if they stop working.
2008 McCain has no other rules.
