We were lied to. Part 1.

John Howard, Prime Minister, June 4, 2007:

"We do at the moment have a target for reducing our greenhouse gas emissions, and that target is the one set by the Kyoto Protocol of 108 per cent of our 1990 levels and that’s got to be achieved between 2008 and 2012 and we are on track to meet that."

Peter Costello, Treasurer, October 10, 2007:

"It is Government policy to meet our Kyoto target, and we are on track for that."

Kevin Rudd, Prime Minister Elect, Monday December 3, 2007:

The advice I have, and this comes from, of course, the most recent tracking to Kyoto target by the Australian Greenhouse Office, is that we are currently likely to exceed our, or overshoot our Kyoto target by one per cent.

The commitment period is on an annual average between 2008 and 2012. I'm just being cautious and up front with you about what the publicly available advice is.
